To honor the memory of pioneering African-American NASA mathematician and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Katherine Johnson. At a time when racial segregation was prevalent throughout the southern United States, Johnson and fellow NASA African-American mathematicians broke through gender and racial barriers and helped pave the way for the diversity that currently extends across all levels of the agency’s workforce and leadership. This scholarship was created by her grandson and Triton alumnus, Trevor Boykin, to encourage the pursuit of higher education among minority students majoring in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
