Tritons Helping Maui

The University of Guam is launching a donation drive to help victims of the
devastating Maui wildfires.

Beginning today, August 25, UOG will accept monetary donations under the
“Tritons Helping Maui” effort.

“Our UOG Community and the rest of our island community are welcome to pitch in.”
said UOG President Dr. Anita Borja-Enriquez. “ The residents of Maui face a long
road to recovery. Our hearts go out to the Maui community as they begin the path to
rebuilding and healing.”

This effort will rely heavily on the generosity of students, faculty, administrators and
staff, alumni and retired professors. This invitation to help through Tritons Helping Maui also extends to the Guam community.

Every dollar donated through Tritons Helping Maui will bring relief to Maui disaster victims.

Donated amounts will be handed over to the University of Hawai’i Foundation to support their HELP MAUI efforts which donates directly to students, faculty and staff, FEEDING MAUI where they prepare thousands of meals for displaced families, and the MAUI RELIEF FUND that provides immediate cash payments to UH students impacted by the wildfires.

The University of Guam and the University of Hawaii Manoa have been regional
partners for over 10 years, most notably for a Masters in Social Work program
and an offering of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

“With your donation you can help provide hope to the people of Maui in the midst of
this unimaginable tragedy.” said UOG Endowment Foundation Executive Director
Katrina Perez “Your generosity will be instrumental in helping their community rebuild
their sacred grounds.”

Farewell, President Krise…

July 10, 2023 marked our last UOGEF Board meeting with 11th UOG President Dr. Thomas W. Krise, Ph.D. We give our sincere appreciation to Dr. Krise for his leadership at UOG and serving on our Board of Directors for the past 5 years. Best wishes and safe travels to him and his wife Patty as they enjoy retirement!

Remembering Dr. Mark Lander

This scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Mark Lander who was a faculty member of the Water and Environmental Research Institute of the Western Pacific, University of Guam, from 1999 to 2022. His cutting-edge research contributed significantly to world-wide understanding of western Pacific weather phenomena and their roles in global weather systems. His vast knowledge in these areas placed him in high demand at professional conferences and workshops around the world. This scholarship will be awarded to one graduate student from the University of Guam’s Master of Science in Environmental Science program whose thesis results are worthy of presentation at a professional conference or publication in the peer-reviewed professional literature, and whose academic performance and personal character exemplify the virtues that Dr. Lander stood for, most especially a commitment to doing honest and reliable science based on sound data and forthright interpretations of it.

To make a donation to honor his memory, please make a donation through the QR code or visit give.uog.edu on our campaigns page.

Island Wisdom: Canoe House Restoration

The University of Guam sees that our region’s success is built by people with the knowledge and drive to make a difference.  We also understand that our sustainability and progress must be based in the knowledge that has been shared by our ancestors for generations.  Island Wisdom sits at the center of these two ideas.  Island Wisdom is our way of life and our path forward.

In the 2022-2023 academic year, UOG created an apprenticeship program to impart island wisdom in the building of a canoe house.  This canoe house would be a key structure in the further preservation of island wisdom and traditional seafaring.

On May 24th, Typhoon Mawar made landfall as a Category 4 storm on the northern part of Guam, causing millions of dollars of damage to utilities and public buildings.  Unfortunately, the canoe house was also severely damaged.  Please donate here to help restore the UOG Island Wisdom: Canoe House.

For more information, visit their website at https://www.uog.edu/student-services/rfk-library/island-wisdom.
