“Financial literacy” is a hot topic these days. According to Investopedia.com, “Financial literacy is the education and understanding of various financial areas. This topic focuses on the ability to manage personal finance matters in an efficient manner, and it includes the knowledge of making appropriate decisions about personal finance such as investing, insurance, real estate, paying for college, budgeting, retirement and tax planning.”
Data shows that most people really don’t understand how to manage their money. January’s Triton Lunch Club will help change that. On January 26th, Ms. Sandra McKeever will be presenting “How to Set & Keep Your New Year’s Financial Resolutions.” This is a topic we can all get better at.
McKeever is the President and Financial Advisor at Asia Pacific Financial Management Group as well as a 2016 University of Guam Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.

On December 16, 2016, the Filipino Community of Guam (FCG) donated $50,000 to the UOG Endowment Foundation as part of the Celebrating the Triton Spirit: Building Our Legacy capital campaign. At the check presentation, Ms. Nita Baldovino, FCG’s President, explained that when she learned over 40% of UOG’s student population is of Filipino descent, she felt it was even more imperative that the organization lend greater support to the University.
“These are the children of taxi drivers, accountants, cooks, builders, and skilled workers who migrated to Guam many years ago, and are now part of the community because of the University of Guam,” Ms. Baldovino said at the recent FCG gala where she first made the donation announcement.
Norman Analista, incoming president for the FCG, and current First Vice President, explained that higher education is very important to Filipinos, so it was only fitting that a donation be made to support UOG. “I’m a proud alumnus of the University of Guam and I’ve experienced for myself how the degrees that I earned have led me towards several exciting career paths. My education gave me options and the freedom to pursue avenues that continue to allow me to support my family and to fulfill personal goals,” he said.
A portion of the funds will be used for upgrades to classrooms at UOG’s School of Education. Dr. John Sanchez, Dean of the School of Education, explained that one of the rooms will be equipped with Smart Board technology to allow education students to be prepared in today’s classrooms. A major portion of the gift will go into the endowment fund which will allow for greater financial benefit to the University of Guam in perpetuity.
To recognize this gift, Rm. 207 at the School of Education will be named in honor of the Filipino Community of Guam.

This year’s Founders Day Gala was extra special as we had an opportunity to show the University’s gratitude for the loyal commitment by the late Mr. Pedro “Pete” Ada and the late Mrs. Fe Perez Ada. Over the decades, the Ada family has been highly involved in UOG’s leadership as both the late Mr. Ada and his son Sonny Ada have chaired the Board of Regents and son-in-law Mr. David John continues to serve as a director with the UOG Endowment Foundation.
The Adas have also supported numerous projects across the campus such as the ROTC program, the Center for Island Sustainability and countless events.
The recent gift to the Celebrating the Triton Spirit: Building Our Legacy Campaign will do two things. First, a major portion of their gift will go towards capital improvement projects that will allow our students to learn and grow on a 21st Century Campus. Secondly, a portion of their gift will go to create the Pedro & Fe Ada Seed Fund will allow students in the Masters of Public Administration program to increase the impact of their projects that reach into the community and provide meaningful social change. For all this, we are truly grateful!
